SURVEY LECTURES

FILTECH 2011 Conference will feature a plenary lecture and 6 survey lectures which provide a survey of current research findings and state-of-the-art developments. The survey lectures are part of the FILTECH 2011 Congress and accessible for all Congress delegates. The plenary lecture is open to all participants (delegates, exhibitors and visitors).

New Developments in the Field of Filtering Dust Separation Techniques   Plenary Lecture
Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Höflinger
Vienna Technical University - Institute of Chemical Engineering - Austria

International Standardization in the Field of Filtration and Separation   Survey Lecture
Prof. Dr. Chikao Kanaoka
Ishikawa National College of Technology - Japan
Dr. Hisao Makino
Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry
Takeshi Yoneda
Yoneda Professional Engineer Office

Bag filter is one of the most popular dust collectors for various purposes and at conditions so that it important to design rationally to satisfy the requirements for particular application. Selection of fabric filter is one of the most important but difficult points in the filter design because its performance not only depends on many factors such as dust, gas and operation conditions, but also changes with time. However no common evaluation or testing method has been established Read more....

Membrane Processes for the Treatment of Water and Wastewater   Survey Lecture
Dr.-Ing. Thomas Peters
Consulting for Membrane Technology - Germany

Membrane processes have become very important instruments in water management, water related environmental engineering and industrial production, because their efficiency has been proven from a technical and economical, as well as an ecological, point of view. The membrane processes are used today for many different purposes, but mainly to overcome water scarcity and to prevent water pollution, whereby the kind of process to be installed as a main step or in combination with other technologies depends on the type of components or contaminants respectively to be separated from the water to be treated, and on/or the quality requirements imposed for the water to be produced. Particle (Size) Characterization   Survey Lecture
Prof. Dr. Bernd Sachweh
BASF SE, GCP/TP - Germany

Particle technology offers great opportunities in developing of innovative products by selective modification of material properties. Therefore, often specially engineered particles are used in a size range from micron to nano. Many processes need special separation technologies to remove residual particles. In order to characterize the efficiency of the separation processes (e.g. filtration) a measurement of the particle size is required. But in some applications the state of agglomeration and shape of the particles interfere with the particle size. Read more....

Nonwovens in Filtration   Survey Lecture
Dr.-Ing. Jörg Sievert
Freudenberg Filtration Technologies KG - Germany

What are nonwoven fabrics and why are they so successful in the filtration industry?
Nonwoven fabrics can be designed in a wide variety, which makes them successful to fulfill the requirements arising from the different areas of filtration. It is common to distinguish between depth-loading and surface-loading filters which require different types of nonwoven fabrics. Both filtration principles will be explained and an extensive range of nonwoven filter media will be introduced, from wet laid to dry laid nonwovens, from nonwovens with very coarse fibres to media with nano fibres. Equipment Selection and Process Design for Solid/Liquid Separation Processes   Survey Lecture
Dr. Steve Tarleton
Loughborough University - Department of Chemical Engineering - UK

Basic liquid filtration data can be obtained in laboratories with relatively elementary equipment, an example being the single leaf filter operating at either constant under- or over- pressure. In some cases it is possible to collect data for sequential operations such as those constituting a filter cycle, though performing these experiments manually gives limited information and can introduce significant errors unless great care is taken. Simulation in the Field of Gas Filtration and Separation   Survey Lecture
Prof. Paolo Tronville
Politecnico di Torino - Dipartimento di Energetica - Italy

The lecture will survey the history and present status of simulation of aerosol capture devices. The intent of these simulations is to explain the influence of various operating parameters on device performance, and, one hopes, to predict performance accurately when parameters differ from those previously used in testing.
