New developments to combine nanofibers and electrostatic charge in air filter media

The focus in synthetic filter media development is shifting from a simple use of fibers from standard manufacturing processes into the tailored design and combination of functional surfaces to improve the ratio between particle filtration efficiency and air flow resistance. The user friendly “one fits all” solution gives way to specialized products emphasising on application specific needs.

Technological platforms behind these developments of synthetic filter media are - amongst others - commonly based on polymers and additives, production processes and process conditions, fiber size and fiber size distribution or post-production surface modifications.

The current paper addresses these issues by giving an overview on recent developments, focussing on the combination of fine fibers and electrostatically enhanced fibers and discusses the potential improvements over conventionally designed synthetic filter media...
