Evaluation of compression and relaxation properties of compressible filter cake

The variation of the internal structure of compressible filter cake deposited on the filter medium in cake filtration with varying applied pressures plays an important role largely controlling the performance of cake filtration process. The cake compressibility responding to the cake compressive pressure has been extensively studied by a number of researchers. However, until now there has been relatively less work on the cake relaxation property during the course of filtration when compared to work on the cake compression, while the cake relaxation property serves as a basis for analyzing cake removal and cake discharge performances which are of essential in cake filtration process. In this study, both cake compression and relaxation properties are examined in detail by carrying out cake filtration experiments in which the applied filtration pressure is suddenly increased and decreased during the course of constant pressure filtration.
