Numerical simulation of the fluid flow and poroelastic deformation in round pleated filter cartridges

Pleated filters are widely used in various filter application. Simulation of filtration pro-cesses helps designers and manufacturers of filter elements to decrease the produc-tion time of new filter designs. In some cases the deformation of the filtering media can not be neglected. The deflection of filtering media due to the fluid flow through it is a complex multiphysics problem. In order to numerically solve this Fluid-Porous Structure Interaction problem we develop an efficient framework using advanced modelling and discretization techniques.

One of the main difficulties of the FPSI problem is that the governing flow equations are naturally defined in the deformed configuration, while the governing poroelastic model is defined in the initial (non-deformed) configuration.
