In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the preparation, functionalization, and mass production of nanofiber. Many technologies have been thoroughly investigated, such as electrospinning, island extrusion, centrifugal spinning, flash spinning, and melt electrospinning. Although it is not difficult to fabricate a delicate micro-structure, how to make full use of the high porosity, large specific surface area and the advantage of the nanofibrous structure to air filter media still requires great effort.
Nax Nano GmbH has developed a new method to produce nanofiber composite filter paper based on the good command of the techniques of both paper manufacture and electrospinning. We integrated an electrospinning unit into the papermaking line in order to produce nano-composite materials in one step rather than two separated lines. By using a crosslinkable water soluble polymer solution, the advantage of this novel technique is obvious. First, the price of machine becomes lower when compares with two lines. Second, the adhesion performance of nanofiber layer with the paper-based substrate is enhanced without any glue, due to the multiple non-covalent interaction. Third, it is easy to incorporate some post-treatment unit to the line before the paper is dried completely in order to improve some special properties or functionalize the composite material. This result is important because we regard electrospinning as a coating process from the view of wet-end chemistry of papermaking.
Moreover, we will also demonstrate some recent progress of the project on biomaterials with Merck and the cooperation with the Technical University of Darmstadt for high-temperature air filtration media....
