One of the most well-known standard test dust for filter and environmental testing is the Arizona test dust A2 fine, which is described in ISO 12103-1 with respect to composition and particle-size distribution. It may be used for testings according to IEC 62885 (DIN EN 60312), ISO 5011, 32-SAMSS-008 (Aramco), the new ISO16860-3 and for many standard test of the filtration industry. While the test dust is mainly quartz (silica) and its median particle size d50,3 is < 10 µm, an increased health risk potential exists because of the alveolar fraction (carcinogenic, TRGS 906).
For this reason, DMT GmbH & Co. KG developed an alternative test dust, the "DMT A2 fine quartz-free", which consists of calcium magnesium carbonate and is without any carcinogenic effect.
Apart from particle-size distribution, this paper also compares the result of filtration tests, which show that the “DMT A2 fine quartz-free” is a good alternative to the Arizona test dust A2 fine according to ISO 12103-1.
